Community Faire
Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008

Sharon Metts will be directing "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" at All Saints' for five performances on Sept. 6, 7, 13, 14 & 15. The Opening Day performance will be outside on the lawn as part of a Gala Community Faire. The Faire will include tasty food, games for young and old, booths with a variety of offerings for sale, musicians, and things not yet dreamed of.

Sharon will direct and oversee all aspects of the play. Kitty will be keeper of the lists for the Faire. This promises to be lots of fun, and an opportunity to bring in revenue for All Saints'. Please look over the areas below and see where you'd enjoy helping. Call the office to volunteer, or sign up in the Parish Hall.

  • PR - we need to really advertise this well: newspapers (Oregonian, Columbian, Reflector), fliers, PDX Backstage (an actors website that Sharon can post info on), Episcopal churches in our region plus other churches in our area, AM NW will put up events on their calendar during their show, and if we can get a group of ten (?) to come and sit in the audience of their show, then they let one of the group verbally mention their event, etc.

Babies In Need
...serving needy newborns in Southwest Washington

Donations continue to arrive daily. We have been blessed so abundantly that we have been able to share some of our bigger clothes with Open House Shelter.

Bethel Lutheran Church Women had their 5th annual shower for Babies In Need. They donated many lovely handmade quilts and brand new clothes and toiletries.

Next Layette Assembly Dates are Tuesday, April 29th and Tuesday, May 27th at 7PM.

Please keep "our" babies and their families in your prayers.

Blessings,

Kitty Ash, Director

All Saints' Yard - A Work in Progress
April 20, 2008

2008 appears to be The Year of the Yard at All Saints', among other exciting events. Here's a status report, and a glimpse of things to come. This may be more than you want to know at one time, but is offered in the spirit of good, open communication.

Grounds Committee: Ellen and Kitty have formed an ad hoc grounds committee. New members are welcome. We have walked the property and evaluated trees, shrubs and beds. Ellen's training as a Master Gardener is a big help. We now have a list of all the trees and shrubs and what each one needs.

Yard Sign: approved, fully funded, and being produced. To be installed in May.

Front Bed:
Beverly Brown has created a beautiful landscape design for the front bed.
3 Stumps ground courtesy of Ellen Smart (plus 4 other stumps around the property)
3 Pagoda Dogwoods purchased by Sheridan Curtis and Sydney Reisbick
Ivy removed (and vinca because it was intertwined with ivy) by work crew of 14 from All Saints' and New Song
Retaining wall for dogwoods - funded by the Astlefords and Haases should be completed within a week
Bed will be mulched and ivy starts and roots will be pulled for next few months, then other planting can be done.

Shrubs: Ellen and Kitty will prune and shape the shrubs.

Shrub removal: Some shrubs have outgrown their spaces and can never be made to look nice and fit in their spaces. They should be removed. Some can be replaced with smaller shrubs at a later time.

  • Junipers and escallonia – island near bridge
  • Mugo pine – lower lot. Will also facilitate making new catch basin and pipe to improve drainage from lower lot prior to resurfacing.
  • Rhodie closest to kitchen window
  • Photinia in mailbox island
  • Lowest limb of pine tree near driveway entrance
  • Dig out roots of blackberries – kitchen side & volunteer trees

Trees for professional: Ellen knows a tree man who does beautiful work for a fair price and is willing to do one or two trees at a time as we are able to afford it. He has given us an estimate for tree pruning and shaping that needs to be done on the following trees.

  • Crabapple
  • Hawthorne (right of narthex)
  • Tall pine tree (right of kitchen window) – prune away from building
  • Japanese Plum (left of bridge)
  • Japanese Plum (across from old shed)
  • Cedar (near lower office door) – prune away from building

It is $975 for all of them. We are checking on two other trees. Perhaps a grant could cover some of the cost.

Parking lot painting: Joe Astleford, foreman. (last week in May) Paint curbs in upper and lower lots, stripes in upper lot, all handicap symbols.

Future Yard Days:

Weed and mulch beds
Power wash parking lot curbs & sidewalks before painting parking lots
Hoe dirt back from top of curbs before painting parking lots
Trim grass side of parking lot curbs
Clean catch drains
Remove asphalt chunks from lower lot
Plant front bed
Edge lawn – power edger in shed
Cut west end blackberries – Rob did 2/3's in April
Poison blackberry area

Jobs requiring $$$:

Replace missing covers over catch drains
New Plants:
*Front of church
*Bridge Island
*Ponderosa Pines west of playground for summer shelter
Tree pruning/removal
Welcome sign above front door
Bark mulch
Grind down irregular cement seam lifted by cherry tree root
Power wash church siding
Resurface lower parking lot
Fence west end of lot (dirt bikes and cars)

This list is a work in progress. Some things are possible now and some later. Please share your ideas and feedback. We’ve already made great strides forward!

Spring Tea at Myrtle's Teahouse

You are cordially invited to our popular Spring Tea on Sunday, May 4 at 11:30 am. Hats large and small are optional. Men and children are welcome.

Myrtle's is usually closed on Sundays, but will open for a group of over 12 people. See the sign-up sheet and menu in the Parish Hall. You are invited (but not required) to indicate your menu selection on the sign-up sheet. This will make it easier for the good folk at Myrtle's.

Questions? Contact Sydney Reisbick at reisbick@earthlink.net.
